Bauhaus anniversary attracts tourists to Thuringia

One of the sources of Thuringia’s innovative drive is the fact that it has always been a laboratory for ideas – in the 16th century, Martin Luther worked here, in the 19th century Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe started modern entrepreneurship, and in 1919, one century ago, the Bauhaus was founded in Weimar, Thuringia, which until today continues to inspire art, architecture, and crafts.

For the Bauhaus centenary next year, the state invites you to visit this breeding ground of modern design and architecture, which is associated with famous artists like Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

A climactic event will take place on April 5 with the opening of the bauhaus museum weimar. Starting in May, the “Haus am Horn”, designed by Georg Muche, will be open to the public again after being thoroughly refurbished. The Thuringian Grand Tour of Modernism allows visitors to experience 30 architectural projects of the Modern Age. A new publication called “1919-2019 – The Modern Age in Thuringia” reports through text and images on major Bauhaus figures and design icons. The book tells fascinating events and introduces the notable landmarks of modern design that the movement left in its wake. The women of the Bauhaus and the global legacy of that school of architecture are the topics of a series of six short films that will be published until January 2019 at the Spiegel Online website.
