Bauhaus University Leads the Way

At first glance, scientific analyses of vast amounts of data and the development of a design platform to improve

lithium ion batteries do not appear to have much in common. But look more closely, and you find that both are under way at Bauhaus University in Weimar.

Bauhaus University broke new ground when it became the first German institute of higher learning to create a junior professorship dedicated to big data analytics. Professor Matthias Hagen currently occupies the chair. Together with his team of researchers and experts from a wide range of fields of application, he hopes to develop tools and algorithms that will make it easier to analyze vast amounts of data. The gigantic collections of data that are being amassed from all over the world, which are known as ‘Big Data’, mean that businesses are increasingly in need of this kind of data processing solution.

Meanwhile Hagen’s colleague in Weimar, Professor Timon Rabczuk was awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council for his work on the COMBAT (Computational Modeling and Design of Lithium Ion Batteries) project. He will receive EUR 2 million over the next five years to research a computer-based design platform for the optimization and development of lithium ion batteries. The aim of the project is to develop bespoke software that makes it possible to analyze and optimize the charging and discharging of batteries in high-performance and heavy-duty applications. (gro)
