BMW extends Eisenach factory

To manufacture high-performance cars, you need state-of-the-art pressing tools and robust body skin panels. As these are exactly what BMW has had manufactured in Eisenach for more than 20 years the Group decided, in May this year, to extend its operations there.

Between 2010 and 2012, BMW invested almost €20 million in new plants and structures in Eisenach. Now it is beginning a second round of investment to future-proof the facility, committing €18 million over the next two years. The update to the factory will include a state-of-the-art servo tryout press and extended tool construction areas with greater crane loads that will increase tool output and make tool production more efficient.

“This comprehensive investment in the future of BMW in Eisenach is evidence of its faith in us and our team,” said Michael Eckl, the factory manager. “It will make us even more competitive and we are complementing that by training up the next generation ourselves, equipping young people to do jobs with a future.”

The structure of the Eisenach factory has changed completely in recent years. Once a workshop-style toolmaking operation, it has been transformed into a high-tech business that makes up to 40 tool kits a year for the pressing sections in BMW factories. The extensions to the factory, where 230 people work, will start in September. (kö)
