Bibliophiles and culture lovers around the world looked toward Weimar in horror on 2 September 2004 when the Duchess Anna Amalia Library – one of the most important collections of literature and music for the period around 1800 - went up in flames due to an electrical fault. About 50,000 of the library’s one million books were totally destroyed, but 118,000 books escaped the blaze, although with varying degrees of damage.
An exhibition that will last until August 2015 showcases progress on restoration work and tells the stories of individual books that have been rediscovered during the restoration and reconstruction. (gro)
