Erfurt aglow with national horticulture show

All over Thuringia’s capital, people are planting, hammering and working away to get everything green and blooming in time for the official start of BUGA, Germany’s national horticulture show.

Visitors can experience Erfurt as the flowery hotspot of Germany for 171 days starting on April 23, 2021. Five large exhibitions and 20 highly varied themed gardens will be ready to explore at the two main exhibition sites, egapark and Petersberg. These masterfully designed gardens are the perfect setting for a sea of roses, irises, lilies, begonias, dahlias and perennials.

Opening at the same time as BUGA is the one-of-a-kind Danakil Desert and Jungle Center at egapark. Visitors can tour the center, look for water and learn how plants and animals in the Danakil desert region survive in the harsh climate. Closer to the historic city center, Petersberg provides a way to travel back in time through various gardening eras: A brightly colored renaissance garden gives way to a baroque garden with its classical topiaries, followed by the flowing lines of a landscape garden. The monastery garden harks back to bygone days on the Petersberg hill. Recreation and relaxation are the name of the game at Geraaue, a roughly 60-hectare recreation park located in northern Erfurt – and the third major component of the BUGA. The national horticulture show’s appeal extends beyond the Erfurt city limits, too – just consider the external BUGA sites. Twenty-five are scattered across Thuringia, including the castle gardens in Dornburg as well as the Park an der Ilm, which contains Goethe’s garden in Weimar. (gro)
