The reverse piezo effect, discovered by Pierre and Jacques Curie in 1880, describes how, if electrical voltage is applied to a material that has an asymmetrical crystal structure, the material is deformed. Piezosystem jena GmbH uses this to good effect to produce high precision sensors and measuring technology.
Founded in 1991 in Jena, it has become a supplier to the world, with its positioning elements in use in micro and nanopositioning of probes and optical systems, for power generation and in areas that require dynamic scan movements. The high-precision products it develops are used in measuring technology, engineering, biotechnology, materials sciences, optics, and semiconductor and laser technolgy.
