A research project entitled “Balance of the Microverse” conducted at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena greatly enhanced Jena’s reputation as a science powerhouse and will undoubtedly have long-term effects on the city’s standing as a location for science. Germany’s Federal Excellence Commission included this project in its list of 57 “excellence clusters” nationwide that will receive federal and state funds in the amount of 385 million euros. “This is the decisive breakthrough for Jena as a science center of international importance,” the Minister for Science, Wolfgang Tiefensee said. The commission’s award acknowledges the developments made in recent years in scientific research and the research environment in Jena. The project uses a holistic approach to conduct research on microbes and how they interact with their environment. Its aims include combating infectious diseases, sustainable agriculture, environmental protection, and stabilizing the climate. (maa)
