Space travel company expands facility in Jena

Construction of a new production and office facility for Jena-Optronik GmbH got under way in mid-November when the foundation stone was laid in an official ceremony at the “Jena 21” technology park. Jena-Optronik develops and produces opto-electronic instruments for monitoring the Earth and sensors that control the positioning of spacecraft. The largest company of this kind in eastern Germany, it has been part of Astrium GmbH, an EADS space travel subsidiary, since 2010.

The company is to invest EUR 20 million to expand its operations in Thuringia and plans to transfer its entire headquarters from its present premises, which are rented, to Jena-Göschwitz in 2015. Managing Director Dietmar Ratzsch describes the move as “the next major milestone in the company’s development”. The new 20,000 square-meter building will accommodate up to 250 staff. The number of employees will be increased from 180 to 220 after the move.

Jena-Optronik develops and produces above all opto-electronic instruments for earth observation and sensors for position control of spacecrafts. Last mentioned are especially used for docking manoeuvres. The necessary software to operate and control the instruments is developed by Jena-Optronik, too. Among the most important customers count lea-ding aerospace organizations in Asia, Europe, Russia and North America as well as aerospace systems companies such as Boeing and Mitsubishi. (gro)
