Thuringia’s fastest-growing sectors

Future-oriented sectors and those already experiencing growth are vital to a region’s economic development. Our new series, based on the ‘Trend Atlas - Thuringia 2020’ study, presents 11 of these growth areas, beginning this issue with the measurement and control engineering sector.

The measurement and control engineering companies in Thuringia specialize in developing and manufacturing sensors, which are used to measure a huge range of physical sizes and conditions. Sensors from this region are used all over the globe and even on Mars to measure particles that are invisible or barely visible to the naked eye.

Because of the close relationship between the measurement and control sector and the optics sector in this region, these companies have gained a fine reputation in the field of optical sensors. Their technological strength and close links with research institutes are typical of many Thuringia-based companies and the secret to their competitiveness. The companies are very active in research and development, as the number of patent applications shows. In 2012, almost 34 percent of patent applications in Thuringia came from the measurement, inspection, optics and photographic sectors.

To foster additional growth and become even stronger competitors at the international level, the deve opers, manufacturers, suppliers, service providers and research institutes working in the sector have joined forces to form an industrial cluster group, Electronic Measurement and Control Technology Thuringia (Elektronische Mess- und Gerätetechnik Thüringen eG).
